Why is Nature So Good for our MindS?

Don’t worry, I’m not about to be that guy who pretends nature is the solution to all our mental health problems (if only it were that simple!!). BUT, nature does some pretty curious, clever, helpful stuff for our mental wellbeing.

The more aware we are of what it does, the more likely we’ll be to take advantage of it. So, next time you’re umming and aahing about leaving the house, remember these:

nature is a chill pill 😎

Ever notice how a walk in the park can feel like a mini-vacation for your brain? Nature has a calming effect on the nervous system. It dials down stress hormones and gives us a natural chill pill.

positive vibes 😄

Nature isn't just calming. Hanging out in green spaces actually boosts our mood and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Connecting with the natural world has even been shown to raise our level of satisfaction with life, giving us a more positive outlook over all.

get in the zone 👌

Feeling scatterbrained? Nature has this magical ability known as the “restorative effect” that sharpens our focus and concentration. It works like a natural reset button for our brain, refreshing and improving how it functions.

kickstart creativity 🎨

Stuck in a creative rut? Nature nudges our brain into a new gear. Like Mother Nature whispering, "Think outside the box." Nature encourages us to get out of our standard rhythm to innovate and find fresh perspectives.

high quality Zzz's 💤

Natural light during the day helps us sleep like a baby at night. It keeps our circadian rhythm in check and improves the quality of our sleep. We all know how fundamental a solid snooze is to our mental wellbeing. #notazombie

Forest friends 👬

Nature is the ultimate wingman for socialising. Outdoor activities are great for building friendships - whether it’s camping, sports or just exploring. And when it comes to in-person socialising vs. online, the science shows our brains light up much more when we’re physically together. So lets energise our minds!

move that Body 🥾

Nature gets us off the couch and moving. Whether it's a stroll or a hike, it's a win-win for our mental and physical health. The mind-body connection is REAL! And moving is a key part of connecting the two.

break free from overthinking 😍

Repetitive thinking or ‘rumination’ can be super harmful to our mental wellbeing. Nature is the off switch for those endless loops of negative thoughts. It's like pressing pause on the worry track, changing up the vibe and getting into the present!

wonders of nature ✨

Ever stood under a sky full of stars or stared at a breathtaking sunset? Nature brings the WOW factor, inspiring awe and wonder. It puts us and our feelings into perspective, reminding us of how small we are, to have humility. At the same time, it inspires us by showing how connected and natural human beings are as part of this great big universe.

Biophilia connection 🌿

Biophilia is just a fancy word for our natural love affair with nature. We're wired to feel good when we're surrounded by greenery, fresh air and the great outdoors. This comes from our evolutionary history. We come from nature. It is us. So, how can we not, on some fundamental level, love what created us?

So, next time we’re feeling a bit meh, let’s step outside! Even if it’s not exactly the countryside, a lil bit o fnature can go a long way. Mother Nature is our friend who’s always there to lift our spirits, no strings attached. 🥰
